Bali Packing List 2026: What You Actually Need

No fluff — what a friend who's been to Bali a dozen times would tell you to bring.

Packing for Bali isn't hard, but getting it wrong costs you — either in sweat (wrong fabrics), embarrassment (wrong outfit at a temple), or money (buying overpriced SPF at a tourist shop). This list is what a friend who's been to Bali a dozen times would tell you to bring. No fluff.

👕 Clothing

Bali is tropical, cultural, and casual. Think light, breathable, and layerable.

  • 4–5 lightweight t-shirts or linen tops (natural fabrics only — synthetics smell fast)
  • 2–3 loose pants or linen trousers (temple-friendly and comfortable)
  • 1–2 dresses or shorts for beach days
  • 1 long-sleeve shirt for scooter rides, cooler evenings, and temple visits
  • 1 lightweight rain jacket or poncho (wet season Oct–Mar, but showers happen year-round)
  • Swimwear (2 sets — one dries while you wear the other)
  • Temple sarong — non-negotiable. Cheaper (€2–3 at any Ubud market) and more hygienic than renting at the gate
  • Sturdy shoes for volcano treks (Gunung Batur, Gunung Agung)
  • Flip-flops or sandals for daily use
  • 5–7 days of underwear

💡 Pro tip: Buy locally. Ubud Market and Seminyak shops sell beautiful linen shirts and sarongs for a fraction of what you'd pay at home. Pack light and shop there.

📱 Electronics

  • Smartphone + charging cable
  • Powerbank (10,000mAh) — power cuts happen, especially outside Seminyak
  • Universal travel adapter (Bali uses Type C/Type F — note: some older outlets are Type A)
  • Headphones for long transfers
  • Camera or GoPro (optional, but rice terraces deserve more than phone shots)
  • Waterproof phone case — waterfalls, boat trips, and tropical rain are guaranteed

💊 Hygiene & Health

  • SPF 50+ sunscreen — and lots of it. Use reef-safe if you're going snorkeling
  • Insect repellent with DEET (dengue is real and mosquitoes bite during the day)
  • Moisturizer (air con is brutal on skin)
  • Hand sanitizer and wet wipes
  • Anti-diarrhea meds (Imodium) + rehydration salts — Bali Belly is not a myth
  • Electrolyte tablets or sachets (heat and humidity drain you fast)
  • Your personal medication kit (ibuprofen, antihistamine, plasters)
  • Small first aid kit
  • Tampons/menstrual products of choice — hard to find in rural areas
  • Condoms (bring your own quality)

💉 Health tip: Get Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccines before you go. Worth it.

📄 Documents

  • Passport (valid for 6+ months)
  • Visa or Visa-on-Arrival confirmation (most EU nationals get 30-day VoA, extendable)
  • Travel and health insurance (include cover for activities like surfing, diving, scooter riding)
  • Hotel/accommodation confirmations (offline or printed)
  • Emergency contacts and embassy number
  • Copies of all important documents (stored separately or in cloud)

🎒 Extras

  • Water bottle with filter (saves plastic, saves money)
  • Small daypack for excursions
  • Quick-dry travel towel (many guesthouses and homestays don't provide them)
  • Padlock for your bag or locker
  • Rupiah cash (IDR) — many warungs and markets are cash-only
  • Small notebook for Ubud journaling vibes (optional but oddly satisfying)

🌺 Bali-Specific Tips

Temple rules

Shoulders and knees must be covered. A sarong tied around your waist is enough at most temples — keep it in your bag at all times.

Scooter life

Renting a scooter is the cheapest way around (~IDR 60,000/day ≈ €3.50). Helmet is mandatory — bring your own or check the rental helmet carefully.

Money

Withdraw Rupiah at the airport or reputable ATMs (BNI, Mandiri, BCA). Avoid “Best Rate” money changers on the street — you'll get scammed.

Water

Never drink tap water. Never. Not even for brushing teeth if you're sensitive.

⚠️ Don't Forget — The 5 Most Important Items

  1. 1.Temple sarong — €2 and it saves every temple visit
  2. 2.Offline maps (Maps.me or Google Maps Offline) — signal is unreliable in the mountains and on Nusa Penida
  3. 3.Reef-safe sunscreen — regular chemical SPF is restricted in Bali's snorkeling zones
  4. 4.Anti-diarrhea medication — Bali Belly is earned. Pack it.
  5. 5.Your hotel's business card — in Indonesian, to show to taxi/ojek drivers who don't speak English
