Dubai Packing List 2026: What to Pack for the UAE

Infinity pools and strict public dress codes. Packing for Dubai well means being ready for both.

Dubai is a study in contrasts: infinity pools and strict public dress codes; world-class restaurants and traditional gold souks; desert heat outside and freezing air conditioning in every mall. Packing for it well means being ready for all of it — and avoiding a few specific pitfalls that catch first-timers out.

👕 Clothing

The rule in Dubai: modern hotels, malls, and beach clubs have relaxed dress codes. Public spaces, souks, and mosques do not. You need both kinds of outfits.

  • 3–4 lightweight t-shirts or linen tops (also for mall ice-box temperature)
  • 2 modest outfits — long pants/trousers + top or dress/blouse below the knee — for souks, mosques, public areas
  • 1–2 smarter outfits for restaurants and nightlife in Marina/DIFC
  • Light jacket or cardigan (Dubai AC is set to arctic year-round)
  • Swimwear for pool and beach (Jumeirah Beach, La Mer — perfectly fine)
  • Comfortable walking shoes (Dubai Mall, Gold Souk, Al Fahidi Historic District = a lot of ground)
  • Sandals for evenings and pool days

🕌 Mosque tip: For the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi (an easy day trip from Dubai), abayas are loaned free at the entrance — but wearing modest clothing underneath is expected.

📱 Electronics

  • Smartphone + charging cables
  • Type G travel adapter — Dubai uses British 3-pin plugs. This is the most-forgotten item. European adapters don't work.
  • Powerbank
  • Headphones
  • Camera (Burj Khalifa sunset, desert safari, Dubai Frame — visually stunning)

⚠️ Important: VoIP apps like WhatsApp calls and Skype are restricted in the UAE. For regular calls, buy a local SIM at the airport (du or etisalat, ~30 AED).

💊 Hygiene & Health

  • SPF 50+ sunscreen (summer UV index 10–12 — extremely high)
  • Moisturizer (desert air and AC are brutal on skin)
  • Lip balm with SPF (often overlooked, always needed)
  • Personal medication kit
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Check medication rules — some common drugs are illegal in the UAE, including some over-the-counter cold medicines. Check the HAAD list and bring a prescription + English doctor's note for anything prescription-based.

📄 Documents

  • Passport (6+ months validity)
  • Visa: Germans and most EU nationals receive 30-day Visa on Arrival (extendable)
  • Travel and health insurance
  • Booking confirmations
  • Document copies
  • Credit card (Visa/Mastercard widely accepted; Amex less so)

🎒 Extras

  • AED cash (Emirati Dirham) — for taxis, tips, and small souk vendors
  • Foldable daypack or tote bag (for souk days when a backpack looks off)
  • Sunglasses + sun hat (mandatory outdoors)
  • Lip balm (desert dryness sneaks up on you)

🌆 Dubai-Specific Tips

Ramadan

If your visit falls during Ramadan (dates shift yearly), eating and drinking publicly during the day is disrespectful and formally prohibited. Tourist zones are lenient, but be considerate.

Desert safari outfits

Wearing sand/beige tones makes for better photos. Bring a scarf for the wind. Avoid flip-flops — sand gets everywhere.

Alcohol

Only in licensed bars, restaurants, and hotels. Strictly prohibited in public. Never on the beach.

⚠️ Don't Forget — The 5 Most Important Items

  1. 1.Type G travel adapter — European plugs don't fit. Buy one before you leave.
  2. 2.Modest outfit for the souks — Gold Souk, Spice Souk, Al Fahidi District
  3. 3.Check your medications against UAE prohibited list — carry a prescription for anything prescription-based
  4. 4.Lip balm — sounds trivial, but the combination of desert air and relentless AC will destroy your lips
  5. 5.Nool app or Careem — cheaper and more reliable than standard Dubai taxis for short trips
