Citizens of the EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and most other Western countries receive a free 30-day visa on arrival at Dubai International Airport. It is extendable for another 30 days for a fee. Citizens of India, many Asian countries, and parts of Africa need to apply for a visa in advance — check the UAE embassy site for your nationality. The process is usually straightforward and done online.

Best Areas to Explore

Old Dubai / Deira is where the real Dubai lives. The Gold Souk, Spice Souk, and textile markets sit beside the historic Dubai Creek. Cross it by traditional abra (water taxi) for just AED 1 (~€0.25) — one of the best-value experiences in the city.

Downtown Dubai is the skyline-postcard area: Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall (world's largest), and the Dubai Fountain — the biggest dancing fountain on earth. The fountain show is free from the waterfront promenade every evening.

JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence) is a free public beach with a lively boardwalk of restaurants and pop-up markets. The Walk at JBR is great for people-watching and street food in the cooler months. Dubai Marina has a stunning waterfront promenade that's free to walk — lined with cafés, yacht views, and the impressive Dubai Marina Mall.

Food: From Shawarma to Fine Dining

Dubai is a food lover's paradise at every price point. Budget travelers should head to Al Dhiyafah Road in Satwa — an authentic strip of Lebanese, Pakistani, and Indian restaurants where a full meal costs AED 20–40 (€5–10). A street shawarma near Deira costs AED 6 and is one of the best fast-food experiences in the world. Ravi Restaurant in Satwa is legendary — Pakistani curries for AED 15–25.

For a splurge, most top-tier restaurants are on par with London or Paris prices. Check restaurant weeks and lunch deals — many five-star restaurants offer 2-course set lunches for AED 100–150 (€25–40). Friday brunch is a Dubai institution: unlimited food and drinks for AED 200–400, usually 12:30pm–4pm. Great value for a special occasion.

Getting Around: Metro vs. Taxi

The Dubai Metro is air-conditioned, punctual, and cheap. A single ride costs AED 1.80–7.50 depending on zones. Get a Nol card (rechargeable smart card) from any station for AED 6 — it also works on RTA buses and water buses. The Red Line connects the airport, Deira, Downtown, and Dubai Marina. The Green Line covers Old Dubai.

Taxis are metered and reasonably priced by Western standards — a 10km ride costs roughly AED 20–30 (€5–8). Use the Careem or Uber apps for pricing transparency. Avoid unofficial "taxis" outside tourist areas.

💡 Tip: The metro runs Sat–Thu 5:30am–midnight and Fri 10am–1am. Plan late-night returns by taxi or book accommodation near a metro station.

When to Visit — Avoid the Summer Heat

Dubai's best season is November to March: temperatures of 20–28°C, clear skies, and the city at its most vibrant. This is also when hotel prices are highest. Peak season is December–January.

April–May and September–October are shoulder seasons: still warm (28–35°C) but with 15–30% lower hotel rates. Summer (June–August) should be avoided unless you have no choice — 40–48°C heat with 80%+ humidity makes outdoor sightseeing miserable. If you must go in summer, most activities shift indoors (malls, museums, indoor ski slopes), and hotels drop to their cheapest prices.
